Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda Supports Bengaluru-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Corridor

The dream of a high-speed “Bullet Train” connecting the major tech cities of South India has received a powerful boost. Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has officially expressed his support for the newly announced Bengaluru-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor. He believes that this project will change the way people travel and help the entire region grow much faster.

In a letter sent to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the former Prime Minister congratulated the government for its vision in the Union Budget 2026. This budget introduced seven new high-speed rail corridors that will cover nearly four thousand kilometers across India. Mr. Deve Gowda noted that these projects are not just about speed but are “growth connectors” that will lead to more jobs and modern transport for the next generation.

One of the most exciting parts of his message was a request to make the project even bigger. He urged the government to extend the Bengaluru-Hyderabad line all the way to Bidar in North Karnataka. He explained that many people in the northern parts of Karnataka and Telangana have been waiting for better transport for a long time. By bringing the high-speed rail to Bidar, the government could help thousands of students, farmers, and business owners reach big cities in just a few hours.

Currently, traveling between cities like Bengaluru and Belagavi can take up to ten hours by bus or regular train. Mr. Deve Gowda pointed out that these long journeys make it very difficult for people to do business or visit family. A high-speed train could cut that time down to just a couple of hours. He believes that connecting the northern and southern parts of the state with fast trains will make the economy much stronger.

The proposed Bengaluru-Hyderabad-Chennai network is being called a “High-Speed Triangle.” This triangle will connect the biggest technology and manufacturing hubs in South India. Once finished, a trip from Bengaluru to Hyderabad that currently takes all night could be completed in just about two hours. This would allow a professional to attend a morning meeting in Hyderabad and be back home in Bengaluru by lunchtime.

Mr. Deve Gowda also highlighted that these trains are much better for the environment compared to cars or planes. High-speed rail uses electricity and moves many more people at once, which helps reduce pollution and traffic on the highways. He stated that this plan fits perfectly with India’s goal of becoming a fully developed nation by the year 2047.

The government is already working on the early plans and surveys for these routes. While it will take a few years to build the tracks and stations, the support from leaders like H.D. Deve Gowda shows that there is a strong desire to bring world-class infrastructure to South India. This project is a major step toward making India a global leader in fast and green transportation.

Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has backed the proposed Bengaluru-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor, calling it a major growth driver for South India. In a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, he urged extending the line to Bidar to boost regional connectivity. The project is part of the Union Budget 2026 plan for seven new high-speed corridors across India.
