By Long-distance train travel in India is about to become much more comfortable and high-tech. The Indian government has announced an ambitious plan to manufacture two 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. These new trains are specifically designed for long journeys where passengers need to sleep comfortably through the night. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this update during the Budget Session of Parliament on February 4, 2026, marking a major milestone in India’s journey toward modern rail travel.
Building a high speed sleeper train is a very complex task that requires several stages of work. The process starts with creating a prototype which is a test version of the train to see how it performs. After the prototype is ready, it goes through many months of tough testing and trials to make sure it is safe for passengers. Only after these trials are successful does the series production begin, which is when the factory starts making many more trains of the same model. These trains are currently being built through a partnership between BEML in Bengaluru and the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just about comfort but also about getting to your destination faster. These trains are designed to reach a top speed of one hundred and eighty kilometers per hour, though they will usually operate at one hundred and sixty kilometers per hour. To keep everyone safe at these high speeds, the trains come equipped with “Kavach,” which is India’s indigenous automatic protection system that prevents trains from colliding with each other. The body of the train is also built with special “crashworthy” designs that meet international safety standards to protect passengers in case of an accident.
Inside the train, passengers will find many features that make the journey feel like a premium experience. The air conditioning units are fitted with special UV-C lamps that kill ninety-nine percent of harmful bacteria in the air to keep the environment healthy. For the first time, the ladders used to climb to the upper berths have been redesigned to be much easier and safer to use. There are also automatic doors that are controlled centrally, fully sealed passages between coaches to block out noise, and emergency “talk-back” units so passengers can speak directly to the train driver if there is a problem.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has already started running on a trial route between Howrah and Kamakhya, and it has been very popular with travelers. The government plans to introduce the remaining two hundred and sixty trains in a phased manner over the next few years. This means they will be added to different routes across India one by one, depending on where the demand is highest and where the tracks are ready to handle high speeds. As these trains become more common, they are expected to eventually replace older long-distance trains and provide a world-class experience for everyone.
