SAIL and RITES Join Forces to Modernize Rail Logistics and Improve Steel Production

The Steel Authority of India Limited, also known as SAIL, has taken a big step to make its transport system better. SAIL is one of India’s largest steel makers, and it has just signed a special agreement with a company called RITES. RITES is an expert in railway engineering and transport. By working together, these two major companies want to make sure that the movement of raw materials and finished steel happens faster and more reliably.

On February 2, 2026, senior leaders from both organizations met in New Delhi to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement is basically a promise to help each other grow. SAIL operates a very large internal railway network inside its massive steel plants and mines. This “mini rail network” is used to carry coal and iron ore into the factories and move finished steel pipes and plates out to the market. Keeping these trains running smoothly is essential for the company to succeed.

One of the most important parts of this partnership is the maintenance of diesel locomotives. Even though the main Indian Railways is moving toward using more electric trains, many industrial plants like SAIL still rely on diesel engines to move heavy loads within their premises. RITES has years of experience in fixing and managing these diesel engines. Under the new deal, RITES will provide what is called “wet leasing” of locomotives. This means RITES will not only provide the train engines but also the skilled people to operate and repair them.

The collaboration will also focus on high-level maintenance for the engines that SAIL already owns. RITES has a special connection with the Indian Railways, which gives them access to rare spare parts and large workshops. This means that if a train engine breaks down at a steel plant, RITES can fix it much faster than anyone else. By reducing the time these machines are broken, SAIL can keep its production lines moving without any stops.

This partnership is not just about fixing engines but also about protecting the environment. Both companies want to find ways to use fuel more efficiently. By making sure the trains are in top condition and that the routes they take are planned better, they can reduce the amount of carbon emissions. This is a great way for big industries to help the country reach its goals for a cleaner and greener future.

For SAIL, this agreement means it can focus more on its main job, which is making high-quality steel for India’s bridges, buildings, and railways. Instead of worrying about how to fix a train engine, they can leave that to the experts at RITES. At the same time, RITES gets to use its technical knowledge to support one of the most important industries in the country. This kind of teamwork between two government-owned companies is a perfect example of how India is working to improve its industrial strength.

In the long run, this deal will help SAIL expand its capacity to produce even more steel. As India builds more cities and better infrastructure, the demand for steel will continue to rise. With a stronger and more modern rail logistics system, SAIL will be ready to meet that demand. This partnership proves that when experts in different fields come together, they can solve complex problems and create a more efficient future for everyone.

SAIL has signed an MoU with RITES to modernize its rail logistics and diesel locomotive maintenance. The partnership includes wet leasing of locomotives, faster repairs, and improved operational efficiency across SAIL’s internal rail network. The collaboration aims to boost steel production, reduce downtime, and support greener, more efficient industrial transport systems in India.
