For many years, the people of Chennai have been waiting for the new train connection between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount. This train line is part of the Mass Rapid Transit System, also known as MRTS. Recently, there was some good news that the train service would finally start on March 10, 2026. However, new reports suggest that the service is unlikely to begin on this date. Many regular passengers are disappointed because they were looking forward to a faster and easier way to travel across south Chennai.
The main reason for the delay is related to safety and official permissions. Before any new train route can open to the public, it must be checked very carefully by experts. On March 5, 2026, a special team led by the Commissioner of Railway Safety visited the new tracks. They traveled along the 5-kilometer line using small trolleys and also operated a test train to see if everything was working correctly. While the inspection was a big step forward, the team found that some additional work still needs to be finished on the tracks.

Because this extra work is not yet complete, the officials have not given the final safety certificate. Safety is the most important thing for the railway department. They want to make sure that the tracks, the signals, and the stations are 100% safe for thousands of passengers. The railway authorities have stated that the trains will only start running after all the suggested improvements are made and the official clearance is issued.
This news is particularly difficult for commuters right now because of other changes in the city. Currently, the Chennai Egmore railway station is going through a major redevelopment. Because of this construction, many regular suburban electric train services have been reduced or canceled since February 20. The new Velachery to St. Thomas Mount line was supposed to help people during this time. It was planned to give passengers another way to reach central parts of the city without facing long delays or traffic jams.
The project to connect Velachery and St. Thomas Mount has a very long history. It was first planned almost 18 years ago in 2008. Over the years, the work faced many problems, such as issues with buying land and legal cases in court. These problems stopped the construction for a long time. In the last few years, the work moved much faster, and everyone thought the wait was finally over. The extension includes two new stations at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam, which will be very useful for local residents.
Once this line opens, St. Thomas Mount will become a very important travel hub. It will connect the MRTS trains with the regular suburban trains and the Chennai Metro. This means a person could easily switch between different types of trains at one single station. Even though there is a small delay right now, the project is in its very final stages. For now, passengers are advised to keep checking for official updates from the Southern Railway. Although we might have to wait a little longer than March 10, the completion of this long-pending project will eventually make traveling in Chennai much better for everyone.
The much-awaited MRTS train service between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount in Chennai is likely to face further delays despite earlier expectations of a March 10, 2026 launch. The Commissioner of Railway Safety inspection identified additional work needed before final clearance. Once operational, the 5-km extension with new stations at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam will significantly improve connectivity by linking MRTS, suburban rail, and Chennai Metro at St. Thomas Mount.
