Rajpura-Mohali Rail Link Expected to Be Ready in 18 Months to Boost Punjab Connectivity

The long-awaited Rajpura-Mohali rail link project has received a significant update that brings good news to the people of Punjab. Patiala Member of Parliament, Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi, recently shared that this important railway line is likely to be completed within the next eighteen months. This project has been a demand for nearly fifty years, and its completion will change how thousands of people travel every day. The new eighteen-kilometer line is designed to create a direct path between Rajpura and Mohali, which will make trips much faster and more convenient for everyone in the region.

Currently, passengers traveling from the Malwa region of Punjab toward the state capital, Chandigarh, have to take a long detour through Ambala in Haryana. This old route adds nearly sixty-six kilometers of extra distance and wastes a lot of time for daily commuters. The new direct rail link will act as a shortcut, connecting southern Punjab districts like Bathinda, Patiala, and Sangrur directly to Mohali and Chandigarh. This change is expected to help around seventy thousand people who travel between these cities every day for work, studies, or business.

The central government has officially declared this a Special Railway Project to ensure that the work happens as quickly as possible. A budget of four hundred and forty-three crore rupees has been set aside to cover the costs of building the tracks and acquiring the necessary land. The project requires about fifty-four hectares of land across three districts, which are Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Mohali. The state government is currently working with railway officials to finish the land acquisition process so that construction can begin on the ground without any more delays.

Apart from saving time for passengers, the new rail link will be a huge boost for the local economy. It will make it much cheaper and faster for industries to move their goods. For example, factories in the manufacturing and textile sectors will be able to send their products to different parts of India more efficiently. It will also help farmers transport their crops to bigger markets at a lower cost. Even the Rajpura Thermal Power Plant will benefit from better logistics, which helps in keeping the power supply steady for the whole state.

The project also has a spiritual and cultural benefit for many people. It will provide easier access to important religious and historical sites like Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and the Sanghol Museum. Pilgrims and tourists will find it much easier to visit these places by train instead of relying only on crowded buses or private cars. By reducing the number of vehicles on the busy Zirakpur-Banur highway, the new railway line will also help in lowering traffic congestion and making the roads safer for everyone.

In addition to this new line, the government has also approved a bypass at Rajpura to fix the current traffic jams on the tracks. This bypass will allow trains to move through the area without getting stuck in the busy Rajpura yard. With these two projects working together, the entire railway network in northern India will become much smoother. Dr. Gandhi and other leaders have thanked the central government for prioritizing these projects. Everyone is now looking forward to eighteen months from now when the first train will finally run on this historic new route.

The Rajpura–Mohali rail link is expected to be completed within 18 months, bringing major relief to commuters in Punjab. The 18 km line will provide a direct connection to Chandigarh, eliminating the long detour via Ambala. Declared a Special Railway Project with a ₹443 crore budget, it will boost regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and support economic and industrial growth across southern Punjab.
