Mumbai Local Train Update: Western Railway Announces 3-Month Block Between Goregaon and CSMT

Mumbaikars who use the Harbour Line to travel between the western suburbs and South Mumbai need to prepare for a major change. Western Railway has decided to impose a massive three-month traffic block on the route between Goregaon and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This decision is part of a larger project to improve the railway system and make travel better for everyone in the long run.

The main reason for this long block is the construction of the 5th and 6th railway lines between Mumbai Central and Borivali. To make space for these new tracks, engineers must demolish and rebuild the old railway bridge between Bandra and Khar. Since this bridge is very important for the existing tracks, train services must be stopped so that the work can be done safely and quickly.

This block will have a big impact on daily life because over three and a half lakh people use this corridor every day. Currently, there are 88 local train services running between Goregaon and CSMT and another 106 services between Bandra and CSMT. During these three months, most of the trains that go all the way to Goregaon will be suspended.

While the service to Goregaon will be mostly closed, Western Railway is planning to keep some limited trains running between Bandra and CSMT. This means passengers from Goregaon, Malad, or Andheri will likely have to travel to Bandra using the regular Western Line and then switch to the Harbour Line if they want to reach South Mumbai.

Originally, the railway officials thought they would need six months to finish this bridge work. However, they realized that a half-year shutdown would cause too much trouble for the public. By using better planning and more workers, they managed to reduce the time to just three months.

The total cost of this massive project is over 964 crore rupees, and the goal is to finish everything by December 2027. Once these extra lines are ready, the railways can separate local suburban trains from long-distance express trains. This will stop the “bottleneck” effect where local trains have to wait for express trains to pass, leading to fewer delays and more frequent service for everyone.

Western Railway officials have said that while a start date is still being finalized, they will give the public plenty of notice before the block begins. Commuters are advised to start looking for alternative routes, such as using the main Western Line to Churchgate and then taking a bus or taxi, or using the Mumbai Metro where possible.

Although the next three months will be difficult for many travelers, the railway department believes that this “short-term pain” is necessary for “long-term gain.” Once the bridge is rebuilt and the new lines are operational, the entire Mumbai local network will be much stronger and more efficient.

Western Railway has announced a three-month traffic block on the Harbour Line between Goregaon and CSMT for bridge reconstruction and 5th–6th line expansion. Over 3.5 lakh daily commuters will be affected as most Goregaon services remain suspended. The ₹964 crore project aims to reduce congestion and improve long-term suburban train efficiency in Mumbai.
