Say Goodbye to Long Ticket Queues: Western Railway to Install 325 New Digital ATVMs in Mumbai

Daily travel for millions of Mumbai local train passengers is about to become much faster and more convenient. Western Railway has officially announced the installation of 325 brand new Digital Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) across its suburban network. This major move aims to solve one of the biggest problems for commuters, the long and tiring ticket windows. 

According to Western Railway officials, these new machines are part of a larger plan to modernize how people buy tickets. Currently, there are 501 ATVMs in use on the Western line, but many of them are old or have stopped working properly. The railway department has identified 110 machines that have reached the end of their working life and will replace them with these high-tech versions. The remaining new machines will be placed at very busy spots where people need them most.

One of the best features of these new Digital ATVMs is their speed and ease of use. Unlike older versions that could sometimes be slow, the upgraded machines are designed for rapid transactions. They will fully support UPI payments, meaning passengers can simply scan a QR code using apps like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm to pay for their journey. This removes the old problem of searching for exact change or needing a special physical smart card.

The railway authorities have also launched a special awareness campaign titled “Meri Ticket, Meri Shaan” to encourage passengers to use these digital tools. Pradeep Kumar, the General Manager of Western Railway, explained that when passengers buy a valid ticket quickly and easily, it helps the entire railway system run more smoothly. By moving more people toward self service machines, the pressure on human manned ticket counters will drop significantly.

To make things even easier, the new machines will be placed in locations that are easy to reach. You will soon see them near station entrances, on foot overbridges, and in large hall areas where people usually gather. This means you can get your ticket while you are walking toward your platform without having to take a long detour to a booking office.

Railway officials also reminded passengers that they can use the “RailOne” or “UTS” mobile apps to book tickets directly on their phones. Combining these mobile apps with the 325 new digital machines will create a queue free experience for most travelers. With these updates, Western Railway is hoping that the days of missing a train because of a long ticket line will soon be a thing of the past.
