JAMMU AND KASHMIR — The beautiful region of Jammu and Kashmir is set to become even more connected to the rest of India. In the latest Union Budget for 2026, the central government has announced a generous allocation of one thousand and eighty-six crore rupees for developing railway infrastructure in the Union Territory. This investment is part of a larger plan to make travel easier and faster for everyone living in or visiting the mountains.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that this funding will help finish important projects that are already being built. One of the biggest goals is to ensure that the railway is a reliable way to travel throughout the entire year. In the past, heavy snow during the winter often closed down the main roads, leaving people stuck. However, the new all-weather rail system will stay open even in the harshest weather, acting as a vital lifeline for the people of the Kashmir Valley.

The government is also focusing on bringing modern trains to the region. Currently, five pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains are running in Jammu and Kashmir. These high-speed trains have changed how people travel by making trips much shorter and more comfortable. To make the journey even more special, the trains serve local food like Dogri cuisine on the Jammu side and Kashmiri dishes on the return journey from Srinagar. This helps passengers feel a deep connection to the local culture while they travel through the stunning landscape.
Many exciting new projects are in the works to reach more remote areas. Engineers are currently busy preparing the plans and reports for a new rail line from Baramulla to Uri. Another big project is the proposed rail link between Jammu and Rajouri, which is moving forward at a very fast pace. These new tracks will help people in border towns and hilly districts get better access to schools, hospitals, and jobs.
Aside from new tracks, the government is also spending nearly three hundred crore rupees to modernize four main railway stations under a special scheme. These stations will be upgraded to have world-class facilities and better waiting areas for travelers. The authorities are also making sure that the environment is protected during this expansion. For example, some plans to build extra lines were put on hold to avoid damaging famous apple orchards, showing that the government wants to balance growth with the needs of local farmers.
The ultimate vision is to make the railway the main driver for tourism and employment in Jammu and Kashmir. With full electrification of the tracks already achieved, the region is now ready for a greener and cleaner future. As these projects are completed over the next few years, the physical and psychological distance between the Valley and the rest of India will continue to disappear.
Union Budget 2026 has allocated ₹1,086 crore to strengthen railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The funding will accelerate ongoing projects, support all-weather rail connectivity, expand new lines like Baramulla–Uri and Jammu–Rajouri, and modernize key stations. With Vande Bharat services already operating and full electrification achieved, the investment aims to boost tourism, connectivity, and economic growth across the Union Territory.
