There is very good news for people who travel by train in Mumbai. The railway department is planning to start air-conditioned (AC) local trains on the route between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Goregaon. This route is part of the Harbour line. Currently, there are AC trains on many other routes in Mumbai, but this specific path does not have any AC services yet. If everything goes well, these new trains could start as early as April. This is when the new railway timetable usually begins.
Many people use the Harbour line every day to go to work or school. Traveling in Mumbai can be very hot and crowded, especially during the summer months. Because of this, more and more passengers have been asking for AC trains. The Central Railway officials are now listening to these requests. They are waiting for new train cars, also called rakes, to arrive. Once they get these new rakes, they want to use them for the CSMT-Goregaon route. This route is very busy and has more than one hundred train services every single day.

The railway officials are working on a plan to change some of the regular trains into AC trains. However, they still need final permission before they can start. If the Central Railway and Western Railway both agree, the new AC trains will be included in the new schedule starting April 1. Right now, there is a train going towards Bandra or Goregaon after every few trains that go to Vashi or Panvel. Thousands of people travel on this line daily, so adding AC trains would make their journey much more comfortable.
One challenge for the railway department is how often the trains can run. Each AC train can only make about twelve to fourteen trips a day. This means there might be long waiting times between AC services. Even with this challenge, the demand for AC travel is growing fast. Recently, the Central Railway started fourteen AC services again on the route between CSMT and Panvel. They now run a total of ninety-four AC services across their different lines.
The railway department is also being very strict about tickets. They have special teams that check tickets inside the AC trains. Recently, they caught many people traveling without the right ticket and collected a lot of money in fines. This shows that more people are trying to use the AC trains. In just a few weeks, hundreds of thousands of people traveled on the AC routes. On average, about forty thousand people use these cool trains every day.
Adding AC locals to the CSMT-Goregaon route will be a big step for Mumbai’s transport system. It will help people who have to travel long distances in the heat. Even though the ticket for an AC train costs more than a regular train, many people are willing to pay for the comfort. Passengers are now waiting for the official announcement in April to see if their commute will finally become cooler and better. This change will surely make daily travel easier for many Mumbaikars.
Central Railway is planning to introduce AC local trains on the CSMT–Goregaon Harbour Line route, potentially starting with the new timetable in April. The move aims to meet rising passenger demand for comfortable travel in Mumbai’s hot and crowded suburban network. Once approved, the new services will improve commuter comfort and expand AC train coverage.
