The Indian government has given a green signal to a very important railway project in Kerala. This project is the doubling of the Alappuzha to Ambalappuzha coastal railway line. For a long time, people traveling through Alappuzha faced many delays because there was only one track. Now, the Union Railway Ministry has approved the plan to build a second track. This is great news for thousands of passengers who use this route every day. It will make train travel much faster and more reliable in the coastal areas of Kerala.
The project covers a distance of about 12.66 kilometers between Alappuzha and Ambalappuzha. The government has sanctioned 324.16 crore rupees for this specific work. This section is a very busy part of the Ernakulam to Kayamkulam railway corridor. Because it was a single line, trains often had to stop and wait for other trains to pass from the opposite direction. This caused a lot of wasted time for students, office workers, and tourists. Once the new double line is finished, these waiting times will disappear, and trains will move much smoother.

The completion of this track will bring many benefits to the state. According to railway officials, the new double line will allow the department to run nine more passenger trains every day. This means more options for people to travel between major cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Not only passenger trains, but the capacity for carrying goods will also increase. It is estimated that the railway can move an extra 2.88 million tonnes of cargo every year. This will help local businesses and industries grow by moving their products faster across the state.
This project is part of a larger plan to improve the entire coastal railway line. Currently, the track from Kayamkulam to Ambalappuzha is already doubled. By finishing the Alappuzha to Ambalappuzha stretch, the railway is slowly completing the mission to have double tracks all the way to Ernakulam. Union Minister Suresh Gopi shared that this decision shows the central government’s commitment to developing Kerala’s transport system. He mentioned that these improvements are being done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make travel easier for everyone.
The doubling of the track will also improve the safety of the trains. Modern signaling and better tracks will be installed as part of this project. When there are two tracks, there is less pressure on the railway staff to manage crossing trains, which reduces the chance of errors. Travelers can look forward to reaching their destinations on time without the usual stress of delays. This project is a big step forward for Kerala’s infrastructure and will help the state stay connected with better and faster rail services. Families can now plan their trips through Alappuzha with more confidence and ease.
Indian Railways has approved a ₹324.16 crore project to double the 12.66 km railway line between Alappuzha and Ambalappuzha in Kerala. The upgrade will remove delays caused by the single-track section and allow up to nine additional passenger trains daily. It will also boost freight capacity by 2.88 million tonnes annually, improving connectivity and efficiency along the busy coastal railway corridor.
