Indian Railway Minister Launches New Rail Tech Policy to Improve Safety

The Indian Railway Minister, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, has introduced a new plan called the Rail Tech Policy. This policy was launched on February 26, 2026. The main goal of this new policy is to make train travel safer and faster for everyone. By using modern technology like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, the government wants to change how trains work in India. A new online portal has also been started so that new companies and experts can share their ideas and help the railways grow.

One of the most exciting parts of this new technology is a system called TRI-Netra. This is a special tool for train drivers that helps them see better. Often, during heavy rain or thick fog, it is hard for drivers to see the tracks or signals clearly. This can lead to delays or accidents. TRI-Netra uses sensors and cameras to show a clear picture of the track even when the weather is bad. This means trains can keep moving safely without stopping for a long time during the winter or monsoon seasons.

The railway is also using a system called Machine Vision Inspection. This system checks the trains while they are moving. It uses smart cameras to see if any parts of the train are loose, broken, or missing. Usually, people have to check these things manually, which takes a lot of time. Now, the machine can do it instantly as the train passes by. This helps in fixing problems before they become dangerous. Several units of this system have already been set up in different parts of India, including the Northeast and the freight corridors.

Another important technology is the Wheel Impact Load Detector. This tool measures how much pressure the wheels are putting on the tracks. If a wheel is damaged or not working correctly, the system sends an alert right away. Along with this, there are systems that use heat cameras to check if the wheels or bearings are getting too hot. Overheating can cause big problems, so checking this in real-time is very helpful for keeping the trains running smoothly.

The government is also starting to use drones to look at the overhead electric wires. These drones have special thermal cameras that can find hot spots in the wires. If a wire is too hot, it might break soon. By using drones, the railway workers can find these spots easily without having to climb up or stop the power. This makes maintenance work much easier and safer for the staff.

The new Rail Tech Policy also makes it easier for small businesses and startups to work with the Indian Railways. Before, it was very difficult for new companies to get involved because of too much paperwork. Now, the process is simpler. The government has also promised to share the cost of developing new ideas. If a company has a great invention for the trains, the railway will pay half the cost to build and test it.

In short, the Rail Tech Policy is a big step toward a modern and digital railway system in India. By using AI, drones, and smart cameras, the Indian Railways is becoming more efficient. These changes will help ensure that trains run on time and that every passenger has a safe journey. It is a great sign for the future of travel in India, making it one of the most technologically advanced railway networks in the world.

Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the Rail Tech Policy 2026 to enhance safety and efficiency using AI, machine learning, and advanced monitoring systems. Key technologies include TRI-Netra for driver visibility, machine vision inspection, and drone-based infrastructure checks. The policy also introduces a platform for startups to collaborate with Indian Railways, promoting innovation and faster modernization.
