The scary incident happened in the afternoon at around two o’clock. People at Kalyan station were waiting for their trains when they saw something very strange. A young man first climbed onto the tin roof of the railway station. From the roof, he then climbed onto the Over Head Equipment pole. This is also called the OHE pole. This pole holds the thick wires that give electricity to run the local trains. The pole he climbed supplies power to platform number one, platform number one A, and platform number two. This was a very dangerous thing to do because those wires have a lot of electric power.
When the railway officers and the police saw the man on the pole, they got very worried. To keep the man safe and prevent a big accident, the railway officials quickly cut off the power supply. They immediately closed the train tracks going down from Thakurli to Ambivli. Because the power was off and the tracks were closed, the train traffic completely stopped. Two big express trains and three local trains had to wait on the tracks. Passengers inside the trains were stuck and did not know what was happening. The railway police and the station staff worked very hard to save the young man. For more than one and a half hours, they requested him to come down safely. They tried everything to bring him down without any harm. But unfortunately, things went wrong. During the rescue, the young man accidentally touched the high voltage overhead wire. He got a massive electric shock and immediately fell down from the tall pole. The railway staff acted very fast. They picked him up and rushed him to a nearby hospital. The doctors are currently giving him medical treatment.
This incident in the afternoon made a bad day even worse for Central Railway passengers. The morning of this Sunday was already full of problems. The railway department had a planned mega block. They were doing construction work to make the platforms longer at Thane and Dombivli stations. They want to run longer trains with fifteen coaches to reduce the daily crowd. This repair work was going on from Saturday midnight until ten o’clock on Sunday morning. Many trains were canceled because of this planned work.
Also, there was another issue early in the morning. At around six o’clock, a technical problem happened near Vikhroli station. Because of this technical fault, the trains moving towards the main city of Mumbai were running very late. The trains were stopping again and again. Passengers had to wait thirty to thirty-five minutes extra just to reach their destinations in the morning.
