By The city of Delhi is seeing a very big cleaning effort near its railway stations. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, often called the MCD, has started a major drive to remove garbage from the train tracks. They are working together with the railway authorities to make the city cleaner and look much better. This is very important news for everyone who lives in Delhi and for the many people who visit the capital city every day.
According to recent reports, the MCD has already removed a massive amount of waste. They have cleared over eighteen thousand four hundred and ninety-five metric tonnes of garbage. This huge amount of trash was collected from one hundred and twenty-three different locations along the railway lines. This is a very big achievement because the total length of the railway tracks in Delhi is about one hundred and two kilometers. The cleaning teams have already finished their work on almost fifty kilometers of these tracks, which is nearly half of the entire area.
The main reason for this big mess was that people living in small houses and colonies near the tracks were throwing their daily garbage right onto the railway lines. Over a long time, this bad habit created huge piles of trash. An official from the MCD explained that this dumped garbage created very serious problems for the environment and the health of the people. It also made the city look very ugly. Because railway stations are usually the first place visitors see when they arrive in Delhi, these mountains of garbage gave a very bad first impression of the city.
The clean-up teams have worked very hard in specific areas of the city. They removed around four thousand one hundred metric tonnes of waste just from the Karol Bagh and Keshavpuram zones. Another area, called the City SP zone, also saw a big clean-up with two thousand seven hundred and three metric tonnes of garbage removed. In the Keshavpuram Zone, near the Azadpur Railway Station, there was a very old and large garbage dump. The workers have completely cleared this old waste site and turned it into an open space that people can actually use.
However, simply picking up the old garbage is not enough to solve the problem permanently. The MCD knows that people might start throwing trash on the tracks again if they do not have a better option. To stop this from happening, the civic body has put sixty-one new twin dustbins near the railway lines. This gives the local residents a proper place to throw their daily waste. Along with providing dustbins, the officials are also talking to the people who live near the tracks. They are running awareness campaigns to teach everyone about the right way to dispose of garbage and the dangers of open dumping.
The commissioner of the MCD, Sanjeev Khirwar, spoke about this important project. He said that cleaning the railway corridors is a top priority for them. He explained that these areas are the most visible entry points into Delhi. He is very happy with the good progress the workers have made so far. He also clearly stated that their goal is not just to clean up the past mess. They are also building strong systems to make sure the garbage does not pile up again in the future. They are doing this by adding more infrastructure like dustbins and by teaching the public to keep their surroundings clean. This joint effort by the MCD and the railways is a wonderful step towards making Delhi a cleaner and healthier city for everyone.
