Trains in Mumbai are very famous across the country. They carry millions of people to their offices, schools, and homes every single day. The local train network is often called the lifeline of the city because people depend on it so much. However, there is a very big problem that the railway department faces daily. Many passengers decide to travel without buying a ticket. Some people do this to save a little money. Other people do it because they are in a hurry and do not want to stand in a long line at the ticket counter. But traveling without a proper ticket is against the law.
The Central Railway manages a very large part of the train network in Mumbai and nearby areas. The officers noticed that ticketless travel was increasing a lot. So, they decided to take very strict action against the rule breakers. The railway department formed special teams of ticket checkers. These checkers started surprise inspections at various railway stations. They also checked tickets inside the moving trains. They worked very hard throughout the entire year to catch the people who were trying to cheat the system.

The results of this massive checking drive are completely shocking. During the financial year of two thousand twenty five and twenty six, the ticket checking teams caught a record number of passengers. They caught around forty one lakh and ninety thousand people traveling without a valid ticket or with a wrong ticket. Because of this huge number of people, the Central Railway collected an unbelievable amount of fine money. The total fine collected in just one year touched over two hundred and fifty one crore rupees. This is a massive sum of money for the railway department.
When we look at the numbers from the year before, we can see a big difference. The total fine collection went up by nearly twenty four percent. In the previous year, the railway collected around two hundred and three crore rupees. The number of people caught without tickets also increased by ten percent. This increase tells us two things. First, the railway ticket checkers are working much harder than before to find people. Second, sadly, a very large number of citizens are still trying to travel for free.
The Mumbai division is the busiest part of the Central Railway. As expected, a very large portion of the fine came directly from the city of Mumbai. The ticket checkers in the Mumbai division caught nearly eighteen lakh ticketless travelers. They collected almost eighty one crore rupees as a penalty just from this one area. But Mumbai was not the only place with this problem. Other big divisions like Pune, Nagpur, Solapur, and Bhusaval also reported many cases. For example, the Bhusaval division also collected over eighty one crore rupees in fines.
In recent years, the railway has started many new air conditioned local trains for the comfort of the passengers. These cool trains provide a relaxing journey during the hot summer months. Because they are more comfortable, the tickets for these AC trains cost more than regular train tickets. Unfortunately, some people are trying to cheat on these special trains as well. The railway teams caught more than one lakh ticketless passengers traveling inside the AC local trains. They collected nearly four crore rupees in fines from these AC train travelers alone.
The month of March in the year two thousand twenty six was especially busy for the ticket checkers. In just that one single month, they caught almost four lakh people without tickets and collected over twenty four crore rupees. The Central Railway officials have given a very clear warning to the public. They have a strict zero tolerance policy, which means they will not forgive anyone caught without a ticket. The railway appeals to all passengers to be honest citizens. Buying a ticket is very important. The money from ticket sales is used to maintain the trains, build better stations, and keep passengers safe. Everyone must buy a valid ticket and follow the law.
Central Railway in Mumbai collected over ₹251 crore in fines during FY 2025–26 by catching nearly 42 lakh ticketless passengers. Strict checking drives and surprise inspections led to a sharp rise in penalties, with Mumbai division contributing significantly. Even AC local trains saw over one lakh violations. Authorities have enforced a zero-tolerance policy, urging commuters to travel with valid tickets to support railway operations and safety.
