The Mumbai local trains are often called the lifeline of the city. Every day, millions of people use these trains to travel to work, school, and home. To keep these passengers safe, the Mumbai Railway Police has a special helpline number, which is 1512. Recently, new data has shown that more and more people are using this helpline to ask for help. In fact, the number of daily calls has jumped significantly. The helpline now receives about 1,800 calls every single day. This is a 65 percent increase compared to the numbers from the year two thousand and twenty-two.

There are many reasons why people are calling the helpline more often. One of the biggest reasons is that passengers now trust the police more. When people lose their bags or forget their belongings on the train, they immediately call 1512 for help. In the past year alone, there were about 25,000 complaints specifically about lost or forgotten items. Because the police have been successful in finding many of these items, travelers feel confident that calling the helpline will actually lead to a solution.

Apart from lost items, the helpline handles many different types of problems. For example, many calls come from women who need help or feel unsafe while traveling. Senior citizens and people who are unwell also use the number during emergencies. Other common complaints include passengers fighting with each other, people traveling in the wrong compartments, or unauthorized sellers making too much noise. The police listen to every caller and try to solve the problem as quickly as possible. Sometimes they send a police officer to the next station to meet the train, and other times they give advice over the phone to calm people down.

Even though the helpline receives thousands of calls, not every call is about a major crime. In fact, less than one percent of the complaints are registered as official crimes. Most issues are small problems that the police can fix quickly. For example, if a passenger is playing cards or music loudly and disturbing others, the police can intervene. Out of the 1,800 calls received every day, about 100 to 130 cases usually need immediate physical action from the officers on duty.

The Mumbai Railway Police has also set up many help desks at different stations to assist people in person. There are now 86 help desks across the city where police personnel are available twenty-four hours a day. These desks work together with the 1512 helpline to make sure that help is always nearby. If you are at a station and have a problem, you can go to these desks, or if you are already on a moving train, you can simply dial the helpline number from your mobile phone.

The rise in calls shows that Mumbaikars are becoming more alert and active. Instead of ignoring a problem or feeling helpless, they are choosing to speak up and inform the authorities. The railway police want to keep this trust alive. They are working hard to reduce the time it takes to respond to a call.
