Central Railway Starts 6 Special Weekend Trains for Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur

The people of Jammu and Kashmir have received very exciting news today. On Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, officially flagged off a special train service. This train is the extended Vande Bharat Express. Before today, this modern train only traveled between Srinagar and Katra. Now, the government has extended the route all the way to Jammu Tawi, which is the biggest railway station in the region. This is a big step because it connects the two main cities of Jammu and Kashmir directly by a high-speed train for the first time.

This new service is very important for many reasons. First, the train is now much bigger than it was before. Earlier, the train had only eight coaches. Because so many people wanted to travel on it, the train was always full. To help more people, the government has upgraded it to a twenty-coach train. This means more than double the number of people can sit and travel comfortably. For families going on holiday or pilgrims visiting the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi, this makes getting a seat much easier.

Another great benefit is the time saved during travel. Usually, traveling between Jammu and Srinagar by car or bus can take seven to twelve hours. This is because the mountain roads are curvy and sometimes blocked by snow or traffic. The new Vande Bharat Express can finish this journey in less than five hours. This is very fast and much more reliable. The train is specially designed to work in very cold weather, even when the temperature is twenty degrees below zero. It has special heaters and strong glass so that it can keep running even during the harsh winter months when the highways are closed.

For travelers coming from other big cities like Delhi or Mumbai, this change is a huge help. Previously, passengers had to get off their train at one station and catch another one at Katra. Now, they can board the train at Jammu Tawi and go straight to Srinagar without any changes. This makes the journey simple and stress-free. It is also good for local business people. Artisans who make beautiful Kashmiri handicrafts and farmers who grow saffron or apples can now move their goods between the cities much faster. This will help the local economy grow and create more jobs for the people living there.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also visited some amazing engineering structures during his trip. He inspected the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the entire world, and the Anji Khad Bridge. These bridges and many long tunnels were built through the tough Himalayan mountains to make this train line possible. The project cost a lot of money, but it has finally linked the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the Indian railway network.

The regular train services for the public will start on May 2, 2026. The train will run six days a week, but it will not run on Tuesdays. There will be two services every day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This gives people plenty of options for their travel plans. Inside the train, passengers will find very comfortable rotating seats, GPS systems to show where the train is, and a special safety system called ‘Kavach’ to prevent accidents. This new train is truly a gift for the region, making travel safe, fast, and very modern for everyone.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off an extended Vande Bharat Express connecting Jammu Tawi to Srinagar. Upgraded to a 20-coach train, it reduces travel time to under five hours. The service improves connectivity, boosts tourism and trade, and marks a major milestone in linking the Kashmir Valley with India’s railway network.
