United States Freight Train Traffic Shows Small Growth in Spring 2026

Trains are very important for moving heavy goods from one place to another. Every week, experts check how many trains are traveling across North America carrying these goods. The Association of American Railroads is a group that watches these train movements very closely. They recently shared their new report for the second week of April in the year two thousand and twenty six. This time is known as week fourteen of the year. The report brings some good news for the business world. It shows that train traffic in the United States grew a little bit compared to the exact same time last year.

During this specific week, train companies in the United States moved over half a million loads of cargo. To be exact, they moved five hundred thousand and forty big train cars and shipping containers. This total number is one point seven percent higher than the amount they moved in the same week in the year two thousand and twenty five. When we look closer at these numbers, we can see two different stories. The number of regular train carloads went up by more than five percent. However, the number of large shipping containers that can go on trucks and ships actually went down by a very small amount.

You might wonder what these big trains were carrying inside them. The expert group tracks ten major types of goods every single week. In this week, seven of those ten groups saw an increase in traffic. The biggest winner was coal. Trains moved a lot more coal this year, with the number going up by thirteen percent. Chemicals also had a very good week with a nice increase. Farm products, except for regular food and grain, went up too. This shows that farms and factories are very busy making things. On the other hand, some items did not do so well. The trains carried fewer cars and car parts this week. The transport of grain and a few other mixed items also saw a small drop in numbers.

The report does not only look at the United States. It also looks at the neighbors in the north and the south. In Canada, the story was very similar to the United States. Canadian train companies saw an increase in their regular train carloads. However, they also saw a small decrease in their large shipping containers. The biggest surprise in the entire report came from Mexico. Mexican train companies had a very strong and busy week. Their regular train loads grew by a massive twenty five percent. Furthermore, their shipping container traffic grew by twenty seven percent. This means business and transport are moving very fast in Mexico right now.

When we put all fourteen weeks of the new year together, the picture looks very positive. Since the start of the year, trains in the United States have moved almost seven million loads of cargo. This overall total is higher than the start of last year. Canada and Mexico are also showing total growth for the year so far. Tracking train traffic is a great way to understand the health of the economy. When trains are full and moving across the country, it means people are buying things and factories are working hard to make new products. Even though the recent growth is small, it is a very stable and good sign for the rest of the year.

Freight train traffic in the United States recorded modest growth in April 2026, with total cargo rising by 1.7% compared to last year. While traditional carloads increased significantly, container traffic saw a slight dip. Coal and chemicals led the gains, reflecting strong industrial activity. Meanwhile, Mexico reported exceptional growth in both carloads and containers, highlighting a robust North American freight environment.
