The residents claimed that the authorities were building fences and taking away materials from the site. They felt this action was unfair and went against the earlier orders of the court.
When the case went to the High Court, a bench of two judges, Justice Ajey S. Gadkari and Justice Kamal R. Khata, listened to both sides. The lawyer representing the Western Railway explained their side of the story. He said that the railways tried to clean up the unauthorized structures before, but they had to stop. This was because some people blocked them by acting as human shields to protect the buildings. The lawyer argued that the railways really needed the court’s official permission to go ahead with their work so they could clear the area safely.

They said that the Western Railway is officially permitted to continue their demolition drive against all the illegal and unauthorized structures. However, the judges also gave a very strict condition to protect the poor families. They said that the railway authorities must protect the interests of the slum dwellers who are legally eligible for new homes.
The government had conducted special surveys in August of the year two thousand and twenty-one to see who was eligible for help. The court made it clear that those residents who were declared eligible in those surveys must not be left without a roof over their heads. These eligible families are called Project Affected People. A government organization called the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, also known as MMRDA, will help these families. The MMRDA will give them new, legal homes in a different place under a project called Mumbai One.
The land that the railways are clearing is very important for the future of Mumbai.
