This new train system will make travel easy in the future. However, the ongoing construction work is creating a lot of trouble for people today. Currently, big construction work is happening near the main entrance of the Perambur Railway Station and along the famous Perambur High Road. Because of this heavy work, daily travellers and local residents are facing many dangerous safety problems. It has become very hard for people to simply cross the street safely.
The main issue is that the Chennai Metro Rail Limited has placed large safety barricades on both sides of the street. These heavy barricades are necessary for the construction, but they have made the driving area very narrow. Because the road is so thin now, cars and buses cannot move freely. The Perambur High Road is always a very busy place. Thousands of people visit this area every single day because there is a major bus stop right next to a huge railway station. During the morning when people go to their offices, and in the evening when they return home, the crowd becomes massive. The traffic jams get very bad during these peak hours.
For the people who travel by bus, the situation is even more scary. Right next to the railway station, there is a special bus shelter. Ideally, this place should be safe for people to stand and wait for their bus. But sadly, auto drivers and people on two-wheelers park their vehicles right inside the bus stop. They park in a very messy way without caring about others. Because all the space is taken by these parked vehicles, the poor passengers are forced to wait out on the main road. Standing on a narrow road with moving traffic is very dangerous and increases the risk of terrible road accidents.
The problem grows even bigger when long-distance express trains arrive at the Perambur Railway Station. When a train stops, hundreds of passengers come out of the station at the exact same time. They all gather near the station gate and the bus stop to look for an auto or a taxi to go home. This large crowd blocks the narrow road even more, making the traffic move very slowly. A daily traveller named Akash shared his bad experience with the local news. He explained that there is absolutely no space left for passengers because bikes and autos take over the bus waiting area. He also pointed out that getting on or off a big bus has become a very tough task.
Akash also highlighted another major safety danger. There is no proper walking path or a safe zebra crossing between the railway station and the bus stop. Because there is no safe place to cross, people just run across the road from many different random spots. To make matters worse, people park their cars and bikes in clear “No Parking” zones. This bad habit forces walkers to step onto the busy road because the walking paths are completely blocked by parked vehicles. It is a very risky daily routine for everyone in that area.
The local traffic police know about these serious problems. A traffic police officer stated that they have sent special policemen to this crowded area. These officers stand on the road during the busy morning and evening times to control the traffic and help reduce the jams. The police have also added extra safety checks when big trains arrive and bring huge crowds out to the road. The traffic department has given a strong warning to everyone who breaks the rules. They said they will take strict action against any person who parks their vehicle in a “No Parking” area. They will also make these selfish drivers pay heavy fines. Everyone hopes that these strict steps will make the Perambur High Road safe again for the common public.
